Baaba Maal/Kwame Kwei Armah, St Georges, 21 March

This evening took the form of a 45 minute interview hosted by Kwame followed by about an hour (including encore) of Baaba singing and playing, accompainied by percussionists Jim Palmer and Mamadou Sarr. OK, Baaba sang like an angel and it was great to hear an acoustic set from him after the ultra-slick shows he normally plays with a full band, but the £23 ticket price for a chat and some songs is not value for money even if you are seeing a superstar. As it happened, we were all out of the hall by 9.40pm, many bemused I'm sure by an evening that just didn't catch fire musically. A big shame.
